CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
“Conflict can be defined as the strong disagreement between people, groups, or
in the family that may results in often angry argument”. It can also define as the lack
of peace in the environment. Family conflict therefore refers to a situation where the
connection or interaction was disrupted because of misconception or
misunderstanding of the two parents and their children. Conflict in the family is the
result of misunderstanding, poor communication or interaction, lack of financial
support, lack of trust, lack of respect, drunkenness, joblessness and favoritism in the
family. These will lead to child abuse, fighting, child molestation and the worst is
suicide that may result into a chaotic situation at home and separation or divorce.
Family conflict is a controversial issue happening nowadays. In social medias,
some of the news reported is about a children who involved in rubbery, crimes and
drugs as a result of lack of support from the family. Other cases are those a wife was
suicide inside her room because of his abusive husband. There are also case
whereby the husband raped his two daughter and locked them inside their room
before he escaped. These kind of incidents take place not only in some cities but
also nationwide and worldwide. When a family is in conflicts, it will affect the
psychological, physical, emotional aspects, behavior and even their spiritual aspects.
These will force them to enclose their lives to other and may affect their studies if
they cannot control their self.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to find out the “EFFECTS OF FAMILY CONFLICT TO THE
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS EXPERIENCED BY THE GRADE 9 STUDENTS OF
MALALINTA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL”.
Specifically, it sought to find answers to the following problems:
1. What are the effects of family conflict to the academic performance as
experienced by the respondents.
2. What are the positive solutions on the effects of family conflict to the
academic performance of the respondents.
1.3 Significance of the Study
The results of this study will be important to parents, students, the society, guidance
counselor and for the future researchers.
Parents
This study may help the parents to become more aware to the possible
impacts and outcomes of family conflict to their children especially on their academic
performance. This will also serve as a useful guide and information for parents as
they do their task in helping their children develop their performance in school.
Students
The result of this study will encourage the students to recognize positive as
well negative aspects of their families and help them to form a healthy sense of their
own identity and an ability to think about the future in a positive manner.

The Society
The result of this study will serve as a basis for the society to allocate sources
to make family stronger and will inform parents and would be parents how to be a
good one. It will also help and guide children especially in their academics. These
would ultimately result in a happy and productive family rather than a burden to
society.

1.4 Scope of the Study
This study was mainly focusing inside the Malalinta National High School. It involved
fifty selected students coming from different section to answer the questionnaires.
The study will focus only in finding the effects of family conflict on the academic
performance of the selected students of Malalinta National High School.

1.5 Limitations of the Study
This study was settled only to the following limitations:
It was limited to the Public school of Malalinta National High School.
It must have a maximum of fifty respondents from grade 9 department.
It seek to looked the effects of family conflicts to the academic performance as
experienced by the grade 9 students of Malalinta National High School.

CHAPTER TWO:
REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE
Cui & Fincham, 2010, Divorce has been shown to impact the mental health of
individual involved. Many couples have noted that they increase symptoms o anxiety
and stress when marital problems are occurring. Divorced individuals experience
lower level of relational satisfaction of other and poorer self-concept about future
relationships, usually after divorce occurring.
Mone, et al., (2011), children in environments of higher marital conflict are
more likely to be exposed to inadequate parenting and erracting parenting. This can
lead to difficulty forming healthy attachments with others. However, many children in
environments exposed to higher level of parental marital conflict show an increased
emotional maturity and are able to more likely development trusting relationships
when divorces occurs, because the conflict exposure decrease.
Ben-Ami & Baker (2012), a family conflict such as parental infidelity or divorce
may lead to insecure attachments as the adult may fear abandonment and have a
need for closeness. To the contrary, parental conflict and infidelity can lead avoidant
attachments such as low self-esteem, negative view of others, and lack of closeness
to others.
Fish, Pavkov, Wetchler,& Bercik (2012), adolescents who are aware of
parental infidelity are more likely to try drugs and drink alcohol. Similarly, they are
likely to participate in risky sexual behavior such as unsafe sex practices and having
multiple partners compared to their peers who do not share this awareness.
Greeman & Johnson (2013), the cognitive changes may make them more
susceptible to having less positive thoughts about other s and be less likely to trust

and engage with others. Also children exposed to parental infidelity are more likely to
not engage in romantic relationships due to fear of being abandoned or of betrayal.
Du Rocher Schudlich et al., (2013), A depressive conflict behavior is a
behavioral pattern, in which patters do not argue with each other openly, but instead
ignore and backstab each other. The child’s reaction were negative and children
were found to be more involved in conflict behavior was either destructive or
depressive.
Lehman et al., (2009) poor parent relationship is a recipe for poor emotional
regulation skills which at a later stage translates to worse emotional outcomes (3).
Several models developed by a plethora of a researcher provide pathways leading to
poor parent relationship and their outcomes, these models indicate that chaotic,
harsh, and neglectful parents are the root cause of the child’s emotional problems. In
essence, this studies underscore the importance of parent relationship to the family.
Lansford (2009). Family conflict especially divorce, can cause distress,
anger, and anxiety. There is a possibility that these children are at an increased risk
of developing poor coping strategies which includes using drugs, risky sexual
behavior, and acting out. When children are dealing with a loss or separation that
may be caused by parental infidelity, then they are more likely to develop insecure
attachment styles and struggle with future interpersonal relationships.
Coln, Jordan, and Mercer (2013). The parenting practices and psychological
control are mediators of the of the relation between constructive and destructive
parental conflict behavior and child’s eternalizing and externalizing problems.
Specifically, there were direct paths from destructive parental conflict behavior to

negative parenting practices , psychological control, and child’s eternalizing and
externalizing problems.
Santos (2014) as cited by Hover, Otten, Vnes, Engels (2010), parenting style
has been defined as a global climate in which a family functions and which
childrearing takes place. Researchers have developed the concept the parenting
styles to describe the interaction between parents and their children during the
socialization process. Much of the research in parenting style has been based on
Bumund (1966), three distinction types of parental styles, i.e., permissive. Several
researchers have been suggested that the permissive.
Related Studies
Dimalanta (2014), “FAMILY DYSFUNCTION AND THE ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS” the study revealed that the
participants experienced and suffered difficulties due to the effect of having a
dysfunctional family to include; their needs and feelings were ignored; felt isolated;
frustrated; stressed and experience difficulty in expressing emotions and feelings to
other people.
Coln et al., (2013). The result of the study showed that parenting practices
and psychological control are mediators of the relation between constructive and
destructive parental conflict behavior and child’s internalizing and externalizing
problems. Specially, there were direct paths from destructive parental conflict
behavior to negative parenting practices, psychology control, and child’s internalizing
and externalizing problems.

Bahrassa NF, Syed M, Su J, Lee RM,. (2011). The result of the study “Family
Conflict and Academic Performance of first-year Asian American undergraduates”
indicate that higher family conflict prior to college was related to lower first semester
college GPA, after controlling for standardized test score and high school rank
(Studies 1-3). Even though psychological distress was related to both family conflict
and GPA, it did not mediate the relationship between family conflict and GPA
(Studies 2&3). In terms of protective factors, the results indicate that life satisfaction
buffered the negative effects of family conflict on first semester college GPA (study
3). Together, these findings support the need to take into account family variables
and psychological well-being in the academic performance of Asian American
students as they transition from high school to college.
Barthassat, J., (2014). The result of the study “Positive and Negative Effects
of Parental Conflicts on Children’s Condition and Behavior” showed that parental
conflicts are represented as continuum from very destructive to very constructive
behaviors. Depending on the styles of parental conflict behavior, children’s emotional
reactions and behavior vary from positive to negative, and are moderated or
mediated by different variables. The primary processing influences the children’s
affect, which interacts with both secondary processing and coping behaviors. The
children’s affects are influence by their observation of the parental conflicts by
attributional styles as well as by their behavior, and these in turn influence the
cognitive elaboration process and the children’s behavior.
Hatachet, F, S,. (2016)he study results have showed that the most important
and prominent family problems experienced by the University of Jordan students
are: Problems in communication between family members, problems with emotional
expression, lack of respect among family members, and lack of trust in the

relationship with the parents. The results also showed that there are no statistically
significant differences in family problems experienced by the University of Jordan
students from the viewpoint of the students themselves due to the variables of
gender, college, and the interaction between them both.
According to the study of Jabal (2012), family problems generally affect the
family's ability to cope with their burden. On the other hand, the prevalence of these
problems hinder the family and therefore individuals to perform the required
functions such as the social interaction, and the renaissance of society scientifically
and economically, which is expected to be performed by society effectively, leading
to the societal equilibrium.
The study of Yasser Ismail (2009) has aimed at identifying the most common
and important behavioral problems among children deprived of family care. And also
it has aimed at identifying how different those problems among the disadvantaged
depending on variable of the period of loss, its type, age of the child during the loss,
gender and academic level. The sample of the study has been (133) boys and girls
between the ages of 10-16 years from accommodation establishments in the Gaza
Strip. The study has concluded results, including: 1- the most of the problems
afflicting deprived of a family environment are:"bad behavior, neuroses, depression,
emotional symptoms" primarily, and "problems with friends and increase of
movement" Secondly. 2- the children who have been deprived of the fathers by
divorce have a lot of problems with their peers according to the opinion of the mother
and child alike, while the children who lost their parents by death have achieved a
lesser degree in behavioral problems, especially with their peers.

Abdulkareem's study (2012) has aimed at recognizing the nature of
relationships within the family, in the light of social variables in the city of Marj in
Libya (the husband and wife relationship, the father and children relationship, the
mother and children relationship, siblings' relationship) and in light of the relationship
of variables of the educational level the head of household (husband, father),
educational level of the female headship (wife, mother), the economic level of the
family, family size, the work of female headship (wife, mother), and the number of
hours of watch satellite channels by the family members. The results have showed
that there is a statistically significant negative correlation in the nature of
relationships within the family, educational level and hours of watch satellite
channels.
Maina, A, R., & Kitainge K., (2018) the study shows that the quality of parent
relationships has significant effects to the child’s academic outcomes as well as
family unity [31,32]. Correlational studies indicate modest associations between
mother-father relationship and student academic performance. Consistent
relationships as reviewed shows support for the individual emotional control,
cooperation on child support and controlling individual parenting style. Parent to
parent relationship may have influencial capacity in the child’s well-being. It is
therefore an individual parent’s responsibility to understand each other’s behaviour
and keep family rules [33-35]. This may help in the growth and development of a
healthy family unit.
Kordi 2010 Findings from the review revealed that authoritative parenting
styles were associated with higher levels of children’s school achievement, though
findings remain inconsistent across cultures and societies. Future studies may
explore some of the salient issues underlying the inconsistencies reported in the

study, particularly the contradictory results between Asian and European American
school children.
Synthesis:
These related studies and the present studies bear similarities as they are all
attempted to find the effects of family conflict to the students and their academic
achievements. This study may differ from the previous study in terms of respondents
and location. Our study will be focusing on the academic performance of the grade 9
students of Malalinta National High School despite family problems that they are
encountered.
Methodology:
This section deals with the methods used. Methods covers the research
design: participants: location of the study: research instrument and data gathering
procedure.
Research Design:
In this study phenomenology was employed.
Participants:
The participants are the grade 9 students of Malalinta National High School
wherein they are the highest number who experienced family conflict.
Location of the study:
This study was conducted at the Malalinta National High School Campus.

Research Instrument:
The researcher prepared a self-structured guide questions that will use in
gathering data and information from the respondents.
Data Gathered Procedure:
The researcher will gather the data through floating questionnaires to be
answered by the respondents. First was the identification of participants followed by
the floating of questionnaires and gather basic information. There were also a follow
up interview to determine what will be the possible solutions to address the problem.
